There are several pressures when painting murals for TV shows. The biggest is time constraints. I normally receive a call a couple of weeks before a show is being filmed with a check on my availability for the proposed day of painting. I then receive a brief of the project and I'm given a couple of days to produce visuals of my design concept. The design must be 100% original and contain no copyrighted elements.
My artwork design is then emailed to the production team for them to check over and suggest any necessary adjustments. When confirmation is received I plan the method for the project to be completed as slickly as possible and pack the paints.
Most Makeover TV Show murals have to be painted within a day and it's normally the day before the 'reveal'. Everything is quite frantic and I have to work around other tradesmen whilst halting, restarting and pausing for the cameras. The cameramen are obviously also busy filming all the other aspects of the home's makeover and it's important that I notify them of anything I'm about to do that will 'make good telly' and wait for them to set up around me.
Recently I have been involved with adding murals to garden shows. They're great to do but weather frequently adds another challenge!
A beach themed mural painted on a plywood panel for ITV1's 'Love Your Garden' with Alan Titchmarsh.
The mural was created to enhance the beach area at the bottom of the garden. The sides of the mural were framed with foliage to 'lose' the edges.
This was my first mural painted for a TV show. It was a teenage girl's bedroom makeover for Cowboy Builders.
A blossom mural painted for a Cancer aftercare centre. A garden area was created by Love Your Garden for the centre and the mural added interest and helped to soften the lines and create a soothing backdrop.

A football mural painted in a boy’s bedroom loosely based on Bournemouth FC colours but with a generic feel to comply with licensing issues.
Silhouettes of Liza Minnelli and Fred Astaire painted in a living room while the home owner enjoyed spa treatment.
A flamboyant mural on a dining room chimney breast featuring original art based on The Mad Hatters Tea Party and featuring caricatures of the family's own pet house rabbits. I have some better photos somewhere including some of additional work carried out on the day with which I will replace these screen grabs when I find them!

A surprise mural for a boy who loves transport! It features his favorite vehicles including a hang glider, a jet plane, a tractor, a military helicopter and a Formula 1 racing car. As with most wall art that I paint for television shows, the mural had to be completed within a day including many stops while the crew break away to film other areas of the home's makeover. I normally receive the brief around a week before filming and only have a couple of days to design the layout of the mural and get it cleared by the production team.
